MedIAN would like to invite you to our Collaborations Skills Workshop at St Anne’s College (Oxford).

Collaborating with other researchers both inside and outside your field of interest is an integral part of working in research. Learning the skills that enable you to identify who to work with and how to work effectively in both small and large groups will provide you with a platform to participate in effective and high value collaborations.

Run by professional facilitators – Facilitate This – this workshop aims to help you to understand what type of worker you are and how you interact with others enabling you to engage in collaboration in an effective way. You will learn skills and techniques to support the dissemination of ideas within a group setting and how to communicate effectively.

Objectives

  1. To know the skills, techniques and develop mind-sets that underpin successful collaboration and the benefits and challenges collaboration presents
  2. To define the stages for developing, delivering and disseminating collaborative research projects and the requirements at each stage and reviewing tools to keep on track
  3. To know your strengths within a team, the building blocks for effective teams and the role of leadership within research teams
  4. To work collaboratively to develop and define a collaborative research project

Format

The session will be highly inter-active with lots of practical group activities, exercises and opportunities to get to know each other.

Learning from a review of collaborations. Understanding the benefits and building blocks of collaboration and personal challenges in collaborating.

13.30 Research – Developing, Delivering & Disseminating
The stages and the requirements of each stage of the research life-cycle and the role of collaboration within it. When the going gets tough – getting back on track.

Using Belbin Profiles to bring teams and team strengths & differences to life. Identifying key strengths and requirements for stages of the research life cycle.

Putting a timeframe on your proposal, identifying stakeholders, methods for collaboration; key gateways; potential sources of funding. Testing with your collaborators. Dealing with set-backs.
